The research program met the summer school of Euronomade, from 13 to 16 September 2018 at Passignano sul Trasimeno (Italy), during the panel entitled “The welfare of the common”.
In front of a careful audience of about one hundred people, the main results of the “Generazioni Precarie” co-research and the cultural and political significance of the platform were presented by the partner BIN Italia. In the discussion that followed, some relevant points emerged. Welfare is increasingly considered today as a mode of production, aiming to directly favor the formation of profits, both through its financialisation (pensions and health) and because it introduces new divisions of labor, through the processes of privatization and outsourcing to private firms.
Even the traditional dichotomy between public and private welfare needs a rethinking effort. The good practices of bottom-up welfare that have been presented and discussed are a concrete example of this and represent a potential tool not only of resistance but of an innovative proposal.
Faced with the reactionary-nationalist cycle that is spreading in Europe, simple cultural and political opposition is not enough. It is necessary to start experimenting with alternative forms of welfare and above all it is necessary to put them in touch one each other. Hence the political value of the platform and the invitation to participate. The invitation that has been more than welcomed!
